Cerebral Palsy Sport is the country’s leading national disability sports charity supporting people with cerebral palsy to reach their sporting potential and putting people with cerebral palsy and their families at the heart of everything we do.

The Need for our Work

Cerebral Palsy is the most common form of physical disability in the world and affects children’s muscle control, coordination and motor skills. In addition to a range of physical difficulties, many children with cerebral palsy report feelings of isolation and exclusion from activities which can impact on well-being and self-belief.

Children with cerebral palsy are significantly more likely to encounter barriers that can prevent them from accessing sport which can make them feel marginalised, isolated and disengaged from their peers and local community. Typical barriers for children with cp include: lack of accessibility and inclusive opportunities, lack of support and a shortfall of skills from professionals around enabling children with cerebral palsy to engage in sports.

People with cerebral palsy and other physical disabilities have told us they are very passionate about sports and enjoy watching and supporting a team, but they had very few real opportunities to participate. They are often excluded from taking part; or they are the last person to be picked or their participation is tokenistic which can leave them feeling isolated and excluded. Our inclusive work aims to address these disadvantages by enabling children to engage in a range of adapted activities that seek to maximise potential and improve skills and well-being.

Our Impact in 2018

  • 76% people with cerebral palsy increased their self-confidence
  • 55% people with cerebral palsy increased their ability
  • 67% people with cerebral palsy improved their physical and emotional wellbeing
  • 83.3% retail customer satisfaction rated our service satisfactory or extremely satisfactory
  • 81.4% of partners rated our partnership engagement as satisfactory or extremely satisfactory.
  • 99.1% of our service users rated our sports events as good or excellent.
  • 100% achieved for satisfaction rating with our members.

Our Delivery In 2018

Participation and Development

  •  We delivered 60 sports events in 2018
  • We were supported by 221 volunteers who devoted 3051 volunteering hours
  • We enabled 30% of participants to attend more than 3 events
  • We attracted participants from 45 counties across England and Wales
  • We supported 1,541 people to stay involved in sport
  • We responded to 2,136 enquiries
  • We enabled 66 cerebral athletes to attend the 2018 CPISRA World Games winning 110 medals
  • We trained 59 people through 4 Cerebral Palsy and Sport Awareness Workshops
  • We supported 804 people with cerebral palsy and other physical disabilities to start their sporting journey.
  • We signed 6 partnership agreements and had 9 partners’ action plans in place
