Our Trustees

Cerebral Palsy Sport is governed by a Board of Trustees.

These Trustees are:

Chair: Aideen Blackborough

Aideen has cerebral palsy and has previously been a manager in a charity which supported disabled and disadvantaged people into employment.  After seven years, she left to start her own Training and Consultancy Business, which focuses on Equality and Diversity and Disability Awareness Training. Aideen has written a book about her experiences of living with Cerebral Palsy and is married with a little boy.


Trustee and Treasurer: Paul Bowman

Outside of Cerebral Palsy Sport, Paul Bowman is Regional Head of Business Intermediary Relationships for Barclays Corporate, where he manages a team of colleagues from Suffolk across to Wales and then all parts North.  As part of this role, Paul has responsibility for delivering his Team’s commitments to achieving commercial mortgage lending aspirations as well as exceeding Barclays conduct and compliance minimum standards.  He has worked as a landing manager as well as a National Performance Manager, where he helped coach and manage across a team of 120 colleagues.  In addition, Paul has also worked in HR, Fraud and Project management functions. Outside of work, Paul is married and has a young family, which he spends most of his personal time ferrying from one sporting activity to another!

Trustee: Paul Marriner

Paul lives in the county of Rutland with his wife Caroline, their 9 year old son Joe and Rebecca, his stepdaughter, who is 26 and has cerebral palsy. Rebecca has shown her family that, although sport is a step too far for her, using any means to deliver someone’s true potential is very rewarding for everyone but especially for Rebecca. Paul is a qualified CIMA accountant, an experienced technology transformation consultant whilst working for organisations such as PwC.

He has delivered various strategies for different organisations – from an international partnership strategy for a UK disability charity to a complete back office strategy for the UK Central Government whilst working for the Cabinet Office. He will look to use these skills and experiences to help Cerebral Palsy Sport grow and use his extensive network to raise awareness and his son Joe is looking forward to volunteering at the events!

Trustee and Interim Tresurer: Paul Schorb

Paul retired as the Financial Director and Company Secretary of Glenstone Property Plc in September 2016, following 40 years in both the professional and corporate sector. He is a Fellow of the Chartered Association of Certified Accountants with experience in financial management and reporting, corporate governance and auditing.

“My decision to retire from full-time employment was based on a long-term desire to work within sport. I am delighted to have to have the opportunity of combining my skills and passion to promote the excellent work carried out by Cerebral Palsy Sport.”

Paul is married with two grown up children and enjoys hill walking, water colour painting, gardening and a variety of sports. He is currently training as a technical field official with British Athletics.

The Role of a Trustee in Cerebral Palsy Sport:

  1. The Cerebral Palsy Sport Trustee Board is collectively responsible for establishing the essential purposes of Cerebral Palsy Sport and we are also responsible for safe-guarding its ethos and values.
  1. Together, we and the Senior Management Team will develop long-term strategy. Our meeting agendas reflect the key points of the strategy to keep us on track.
  1. We create policies to govern organisational activity. These cover:
  • Guidance and procedures for staff, volunteers and clients/service users
  • Systems for reporting and monitoring
  • An ethical framework for everyone connected with the organisation
  • Conduct of trustees and board business
  • Ultimate policy-making responsibility belongs to the Board. For this reason, we have the responsibility of keeping appraised of our policies. Revisions to some policies emanating from staff may give rise to a recommendation for the board to discuss, and bate. Examples of these may include Health and Safety policies, child and data protection policies and occupational health policies.
  1. We create and implement comprehensive, fair and legal personnel policies. These protect the organisation and those who work for us. They cover:
  • Recruitment
  • Support
  • Appraisal
  • Remuneration
  • Discipline
  1. We recruit and select new trustee board members.
  1. We make sure our Memorandum and Articles of Association are followed. In particular our activities must comply with our charitable objects as stated in our memorandum.
  1. We are responsible for checking that all our activities are legal.
  1. We ensure that Cerebral Palsy Sport as a charity and a company fulfils our accountability as required by law to:
  • The Charity Commission
  • HM Revenue and Customs
  • Registrar of Companies

We are also accountable to:

  • Donors and funders and the Fundraising Regulator
  • Beneficiaries and members
  • Staff and volunteers
  • The general public

This means publishing annual reports and accounts. We are responsible for effectively managing Cerebral Palsy Sport’s resources so it can meet its charitable objects.  This means:

  •  Securing sufficient resources to fulfil the mission
  • Monitoring spending in the best interests of the organisation
  • Approving the annual financial statement and budget
  • Protecting Cerebral Palsy Sport against liability by providing insurance
  • Seeking to minimise risk for the organisation
  • Participating in fundraising
  • Ensuring legal compliance
  1. We create policy covering the employment of our Chief Executive. We also select and support her and review her performance. We recognise and respect the domain of staff responsibility. At the same time, we create policy to guide staff activities and safeguard Cerebral Palsy Sport’s interests.
  1. We keep our own house in order by engaging in:
  • Productive meetings
  • Effective committees with adequate resources
  • Development activities
  • Regular performance reviews
  • Partnership with consultants where necessary
  1. Through our own behaviour, our governance oversight and our activities on behalf of Cerebral Palsy Sport, we enhance and protect its reputation. We are good ambassadors for Cerebral Palsy Sport and adhere to our codes of conduct
