Plant Welding Triples Tournament, 21st & 22nd June 2008.
This was the eleventh year that this tournament has been generously sponsored by the
Carlin Family who own 'Plant Welding Engineering' at Colwick, Nottingham.
George Carlin started the sponsorship back in 1997 after seeing the disabled bowlers practising for the
Paralympics at Gedling IBC just before they went to Atlanta for the 1996 Games. He gradually increased the amount of sponsorship.
When George retired and handed over the business to his son Doug, he continued and increased the support
for the event. Part of the sponsorship is now used to provide trophies for the DBE Masters Championships.
Financial help such as the Carlins and Chalkies is invaluable to our organisation as we receive no
outside funding. It is great to be able to give a decent prize to the winners of a disabled event, a prize befitting their
skill and dedication to their sport.
This year was no disappointment; the competition was as keen as ever and the standard of bowling very high.
Last years winners, Laurie Turner, George Pierrepoint and Les Smith were beaten into second place by
the formidable trio of Kevin Woolmore, Percy Powell and newcomer to the tournament, Chris Burton.
Stealing third place from John Appleton, Roy Burton and young newcomer Adam Summerscales on shots difference were,
Owen Smithson, Val Bradley and Alan Cunningham. A closely contested tournament!
The next disabled event at Gedling IBC, Nottingham is the Gedling Open Pairs on 2nd and 3rd of August.
Anyone with a disability who would like to enter, contact Margaret Smith on 0115 9404609
or email - maggynet2@yahoo.com. Subject - Gedling Pairs.
CP Sport National Singles 7th & 8th June 2008.
This year’s event was fiercely contested for both trophies with some wonderful bowls played.
Many of the old familiar faces were there along with a couple of new ones, although several of the regular
squad members were missing due to injuries and illness.
Thanks go to 'Chalkie' White of 'Whites Palletts', Nottingham for providing the new squad shirts for the
bowlers and the helpers, they look really smart.
A good weekend was had by all!

International Test Series, Nottingham, England September 2006.
At the beginning of the year I decided to organise a pan-disability international event aimed at the
countries not involved in the FESPIC games, namely the home countries, South Africa and Israel. During the CP ISRA World
games in Connecticut, the Australian team expressed a desire to come and play in England and therefore asked for an
invite, word got around and requests for invitations also came in from Korea and Malaysia. Hong Kong contacted me at a
later date but by that time I just couldn't take any more entries due to the size of the venue. We finished up with
12 teams in total. This only goes to show the need for more international competition.
The format for the event was new to everyone and proved to be very popular. Teams of five played pairs
and triples in the mornings and reformed as singles and fours in the afternoon session. 12 teams played in two groups
of 6, they played a different country each day for 5 days in a round robin. Points from all games were added together
to determine the group winners. On the 6th day there were finals in singles, pairs, triples and fours, and
on the 7th day, a team final with the two top teams playing all four disciplines. All points were added together
to determine the Team Champions.
This format gave all competitors plenty of variety and lots of games and also opportunity to play in a
maximum of 4 finals.
The whole weeks bowling went really well and we finished off with a big party and presentation evening.
It was great to see all nationalities on the dance floor together; it was a terrific social evening.
One of the best things about the event was the number of CP bowlers involved and even more so, how many
actually won the medals.

Australia won the team championship, beating Scotland in the final.
All but one country included CP bowlers in their teams.
No longer are our CP bowlers the underdogs, for years the scene was dominated by the para's and amputees
but no more. We now have some of the best bowlers in the world. They never fail to make me feel very proud.
