England’s CP World Championships come to an end with 4th place

After a clean sheet in the group stages, England’s  CP Football World Championship title dreams were brought to an end last week after they suffered a 3-1 semi-final defeat to Iran.

Following their quarter final win against the USA , Andy Smith’s side had built up their momentum but came unstuck against an impressive Iranian team in San Luis, going two goals behind early in the first half before Dave Porcher reduced the arrears going into the break.

Despite a strong second-half performance in which the Three Lions tested their opponents, it was another early goal which settled the scoreline in Iran’s favour.

England then had a play-off opportunity for third place against Russia on Saturday evening. In another amazing match the English team forced the Russians to work very hard to finally beat them on the extra time.

The first two clear opportunities were for England but Russia kept always the ball control. On the second half the Russians kept pressing on the England goal but were unable to break the good English defense.

At the extra time, the penalty shootout saw two goals from Borkin Aleksei and Tumakov Aleksei to finish 2-0 to Russia.
