Final group matches of the CP U19 Football World Championships

CPWG_120815RB_00315England’s footballers lost 3-0 against Brazil this afternoon which puts them on course for a semi-final meeting with Russia.

The opening match saw a plucky performance by Japan against a Netherlands team with superior skills and physique. The Japanese played courageously to the final whistle whilst conceding nine goals.

The highlight of the day was the fiercely competitive game between Brazil and England. Despite the intense heat, the game provided great entertainment and the outcome was in the balance until the South Americans scored twice from break-aways in added time.

The first half was very even with both sides creating opportunities before Brazil broke the deadlock seconds before the break through Bruno Pratis Da Silva. As the game progressed Brazil applied greater pressure and brought some high quality saves from Giles Moore in the England goal before scoring two late goals through Wessley de Souza Mendes to run out 3-0 victors.

Brazil’s prize for topping their group is a semi-final clash with Scotland, the group B runners up, tomorrow (Thursday).

The endeavour of the Australian team against a very well drilled Russian side was typified by the outstanding commitment shown by Zachary Jones and goalkeeper Matthew Hearne. The Russians played neat possession football and deservedly topped their group.
