Middlesbrough SportStart Camp- 8th December 2018- Report

Our December SportStart camp took place at The King’s Academy in Middlesbrough. The venue was very accommodating, accessible and friendly staff to welcome us in. The event was held in the sports hall where there was ample space to perform all the sports.

At the event, we had 10 participants altogether all varying in abilities. Some had tried all the sports before and some had never tried any of them. We’re pleased to announce that everyone went home with a certificate and a big smile on their face.

We saw three clubs join us and they all delivered fantastic events. All participants were involved no matter what their ability was. The first club was the Middlesbrough Football Club Foundation. Participants had the opportunity to learn how to move the ball around the space provided as well as have a small game at the end. The second sport was Wheelchair Rugby and this was delivered by the Wheelchair Rugby Regional Officer. Sports wheelchairs were provided and all participants had a go at using them whilst passing the ball. A small game was played at the end where participants got to score tries and bump wheelchairs! The third and final club was from The Tennis Foundation. Participants got to try out different skills throughout the session in a carousel of activities. The skills learnt were balancing, striking, catching, hitting and many more!

All clubs that delivered were extremely inclusive and there were smiles all round from the participants.  A big thank you to the coaches for coming and delivering such a successful event.

Well done to all participants who never failed to give their 100% into every skill and activity on the day.

Huddersfield SportStart- Schools event- 28th September 2018- Report

Friday 28th September saw a successful event at Longley Tennis Club in Huddersfield. Thank you to the venue for letting us host our event there. The event was in partnership with Linda Stacey at Newsome High School who helped the event run successfully and managed to get 59 students to attend. The ages ranged from Year 1 right up to year 13.

The clubs that delivered at the event were fantastic and adapted their sessions accordingly to cater for different ages and abilities. We had 6 different sports available at the SportStart which were Football, Boccia, Multi-Sport, Rugby, Gymnastics and Tennis. With a large range of sports, the students really enjoyed the day and there was something for everyone.

A huge thank you to the following sports clubs for making the day a success and a pleasure to deliver. The SportStart days cannot happen without your support:

Folkestone SportStart- 10th April 2018- Report

This event was our first SportStart of the year. The event was held at Folkestone Sports Centre Trust in Kent. A big thank you to a great venue who are willing to create opportunities and inclusion for all. Also to the Folkestone Sports Centre Staff who helped make the event run smoothly.

There were 15 participants altogether ranging from 9 to 46 years old. There was something for everyone and all activities were easily adaptable for all abilities.

The clubs that we had involved with the event were:

www.FDTTA.org – Table Tennis Club

Canterbury Hellfire Wheelchair Rugby Club

Folkestone Optimist Hockey Club

B-Hundu outdoor adventure activities (Archery)

Seapoint Canoe Centre (Canoe/Kayak)

Etchinghill Golf Club

And more! All of the participants had great fun on all of the activities and the coaches were fantastic at making an inclusive environment for everyone. Most participants were from the Kent area meaning they could sign up to the clubs and attend taster sessions that the clubs were offering.

A very big thank you to all of the clubs that gave their time to come and deliver the taster sessions for the participants. A thoroughly enjoyable event.

Feedback from the event was very positive:

“Amazing event giving great opportunities to try sport. It was outstanding.”

“If I could, I would join them all!” (Talking about the sports clubs).

“Very enjoyable event.”

2015 Reports:

On Thursday 5th November; Cerebral Palsy Sport in partnership with Rushcliffe School Sport Partnership hosted a SportStart event at the Lee Westwood Leisure Centre, part of Nottingham Trent University’s Clifton Campus.

36 children, from SEN schools and mainstream schools, arrived in the morning to take part in the SportStart event and give lots of new sports a try.

Rotating through the different activities, participants had the opportunity to take part in Table Cricket, Tennis, Football and bowls. Trying their best at every activity, although some discovered a new favourite sport, they enjoyed every activity they took part in with lots of cheering and smiling all day.

Working with the coaches from CP Sport with other clubs and organisations, staff from the schools and parents found out about different disability sports and adapted sports which would provide fantastic inclusive opportunities for their young participants. Supported to understand how to deliver different sports, staff were given ideas that they could take back to their schools and develop more activity for the young people on a regular basis.

As the activities drew to a close and a fun-filled day enjoyed by all allowing young people to access new and exciting sports came to an end; all of our young sport stars received their certificates for their brilliant efforts throughout the day.

A huge thank you to needs to be given to Chris Ballard from Rushcliffe School Sports Partnership who helped in organising the events, as well as to Sue Moore, the Table cricket Lead Officer for Nottinghamshire, Kath Smith and Margaret Smith from Gedling Indoor Bowls Club and the team from ActiveAce that delivered a wonderful tennis session.

IMG_0850To form a lasting legacy, children were all given information about opportunities through Cerebral Palsy Sport and the local sports clubs to allow them keeping achieving their potential through participation in sport. We hope that students will attend sessions run by these groups in the personal time.
