Jodie – My Marathon Fundraising Story
Jodie has hemiplegic cerebral palsy and we are so delighted that she is part of our 2019 Team CP Sport London Marathon Runners team.
Jodie chose to run for Cerebral Palsy Sport for all the CP community out there and to show it can be done. Jodie has taken time out from her training to share with us why she wanted to run the 2019 London Marathon.
Why do you want to run the London Marathon?
“I actually have CP myself mildly on the right side of my body (Hemiplegia). I have number of reasons for doing it apart from the massive mental challenge I will face. From a young age I always got told by the doctors and some teachers I wouldn’t achieve great things. From riding a bike to passing my GCSE’s (Believe it or not I can actually do both – even managed to get a 2:1 degree too) So I thought I would give this ago. It’s not impossible right?
I’ve always struggled with sports and hated PE when I was at school. However in adulthood I’ve really started to enjoy the gym not only for the physical benefits, for the mental side too! I now love running too!”
What does supporting Cerebral Palsy Sport mean to you?
“A lot, I consider myself to be one of the lucky ones as I only have CP mildly. I am doing it for all the CP community because it’s so great!”
Why have you chosen Cerebral Palsy Sport to run for?
“Because I have cerebral palsy myself and think it’s a really great charity by helping support people with cerebral palsy to reach their life potential through sport and active recreation which is just simply amazing!”
How is the training going and what are you enjoying the most?
“I am actually really enjoying training and I’m up to 10 miles had a week off due to tonsillitis. As well as everything else I’m doing to help train for it which includes: Hill training, Park runs, intervals, strength and conditioning and yoga too. Honestly I have never felt physically or mentally better in my life. I’ve also met some amazing people who have been helping me train from my local running club Ealing Eagles (Wei, Jane & Eddy – thank you)”
What time do you hope to achieve for the London Marathon?
“I don’t really mind I just want to finish – I am aiming for under 6 hours.”
What do you believe to be the biggest challenges/highlights in undertaking this challenge.
“The mental challenge and the lack of toenails oh and the blisters!”
