Frame Running

Frame Running (formerly known as RaceRunning) is an adapted sport for children, young people and adults who cannot functionally run and rely on sports aids for mobility and balance.

Learn more about Frame Running here:

A Frame Runner is a three wheeled frame where the athlete is supported by a saddle and body plate. The athlete propels against the frame using their feet, and steers using the mobility within their hands and/or arms. People with cerebral palsy can take part in Frame Running as a recreational activity and Frame Running is a very effective way of improving overall fitness, strength and physical and emotional well-being.

There is also competitions available with athletics events in distances from 60m, 100m, 200m, 400m, 800m and 1500m depending on the athlete’s experience and level of fitness.

Most participants are able to use the frame to propel themselves considerably faster than they can unassisted despite considerable physical challenges. The Frame Runner can be used by children from 3-4 years through to adulthood. It is predominantly suitable for those with Cerebral Palsy, although it is also suitable for those with Muscular Dystrophy, Parkinsons Disease and other disabilities that affect mobility and balance.

Through our Frame Running sessions we also aim to provide a pathway for children and young people with cerebral palsy to compete in regional and national championships so that they can fulfil their individual goals and aspirations around being an athlete.

The benefits of our programme include improving physical health, emotional health and providing opportunities for children to meet other children and develop friendships whilst expanding their social networks. This also has an indirect benefit to families as they start to meet other families through sessions and competitions which will provide significant peer support to families as well.

In 2014, Cerebral Palsy was successful in securing Sport England Get Equipped funding to purchase a number of Frame Running frames and to run a series of Frame Running Taster Days.

Our Partner of the Year 2016 – Quest 88 Limited supports our events by showcasing a selective range of exciting Quest 88 All Ability Cycling products at some of the Frame Running events throughout the year. They will also be there to provide assistance with the Petra running bikes used for Frame Running.
