Marc – My Fundraising Story

Marathon Man Marc!IMG_1792

Marc took on the London Marathon despite having a hatred of running and he smashed his target finish time. Marc Edwards, assistant headteacher at Flint High School, finished the marathon in four hours and two minutes – more than half an hour faster than his anticipated time. He has helped raise almost £2,300 for Cerebral Palsy Sport, he was inspired to take on the challenge when he saw our photograph of two young boys playing football using walking frames on Twitter.

Chaddy Park football twinsHe said, “As a father of a football crazy three-year-old son myself, the photo really resonated with me and I felt I wanted to do something to help.

“I contacted Cerebral Palsy Sport to see if they would like me to carry out some fundraising on their behalf and they said they had two places on this year’s London Marathon, so how could I refuse?

“I do actually really hate running but, I appreciate I do have the ability to run.”

Marc was particularly touched when he found out the grandparents of one of the boys in the photograph had donated to his fund. “It was a brilliant feeling reaching the finish and knowing I’ve helped raise funds for Cerebral Palsy Sport, such a wonderful charity, makes it all worthwhile. It was an absolutely amazing experience, nothing like you could ever imagine. I knew it was going to be hard but it was much harder than I thought. The last six miles were tough but I did them in just under an hour and the last three miles were my fastest of all, I just went for it, overtaking people in my time category.”

Flint High School, where Marc works as a teacher, held a non-uniform day which raised more than £500 and a further £500 was raised through a sponsored fitness challenge at the school. Marc added: “The crowds were screaming support for me along the way, handing out sweets and drinks which kept me going. I really appreciate all the sponsorship from the students, all the parents who have come into school with donations and everyone who has donated online, thank you so much.”
